ASTERLEY BROS COCKTAIL CLUB

Firstly, thank you so much for being a part of the Club! Each month we post exclusive content and discount codes in the Member’s Area, so please ensure you check back each time you receive the monthly box.

We wanted to create a unique Cocktail Club, different from the standard offerings out there, and so we decided to take a new approach:

  • We release a new cocktail every month. It must be seasonally focussed and delicious

  • We only use premium spirits in our cocktails, no cheap products to bulk up margins

  • We want to champion and showcase Independent British brands in our drinks and will be highlighting products we truly believe in each month

Joe Schofield, our Creative Director, will be designing the cocktail recipes each month and Joe has won many awards over his career working in bars. Having worked at The Savoy in London, and The Tippling Club in Singapore, in July 2018, Joe was awarded one of the most prestigious honours an individual can receive in the industry; 'International Bartender of The Year' in the Tales of The Cocktail Spirited Awards. This was shortly followed by the equally as prestigious title, 'Bartender’s Bartender' at The World’s 50 Best Bars 2018. He is the first person in history to have won both awards. He is also an author, having written the definitive classic cocktail recipe book, ‘Fine & Classic Cocktails’, available on Amazon.

Naturally all these cocktails will contain our Asterley Bros products, so each drink will veer towards being either an Aperitivo (Pre-dinner / Primer) or a Digestivo (After-dinner / Finisher) drink.

Each month we release a unique cocktail with an intensely seasonal focus, to be part of our Spring, Summer, Autumn & Winter collections. We want to take you on a journey through the world of seasons, flavours, spirits and serves that we love, and we want to share them with you all!

the grasshopper

The grasshopper, a delicious after dinner drink, slightly sweet, minty and delicious and usually a bright, bold green colour! Heard of mint chocolate ice cream? It’s basically a blend of liqueur and ice cream, yum! The cocktail originated from New Orleans, Louisiana and became popular in the 1950s. During its popularity in the 1950s, it became known as grandma's go to drink, (yes! we love that!) and we all know grandma’s recipes are a hit! It’s made of equal parts of creme de menthe, creme de cacao and cream.

the martinez

The Martinez, another ‘ultimate classic’ old school cocktail. It is made with equal parts of gin, sweet vermouth, plus maraschino liqueur and bitters. This combination is what inspired different martinis today! Although it’s a classic cocktail, it’s origins are unclear. What we do know is that it may have come from legendary bartender and author Jerry Thomas, where he invented the cocktail whilst travelling to the port city of Martinez, California. The use of different gins varied over the years and modern styles today create a more citrusy flavour and we love ours with an Old Tom

this month’s INDEPENDENT BRAND PARTNER

SUMMER COLLECTION, EPISODE 2: the house of botanicals - classic old tom

Each month we aim to showcase one of the independent brands that we love and have used to create the cocktail of the month.

This month its the the turn of THE HOUSE OF BOTANICALS, and their Classic Old Tom is packed with delicious flavour and complexity

Check out their website for more info.

the house of botanicals

Established in 2009, and one of the oldest ‘bartender owned brands’ in the UK, they are well known for their botanical based beverages and as well as the House of Botanicals range of gins, they also make Dr Adam’s Cocktail Bitters and the Italian influenced Pietro Nicola range of liqueurs and amari. Busy people! They are based in the heart of Aberdeen, in the North-East of Scotland.

An amazing family-owned business, run by Adam & Steffie, they stand for a zero waste ethos and ethically source all raw materials. With their main aim to create a range of unique quality, hand-crafted products based on botanicals and the influence they have in the world of mixed drinks, we stand by this too!

Classic Old Tom Gin

The first spirit launched from the HoB brand, its inspiration comes from the Old Tom gins of yesteryear. Botanically rich and slightly sweetened, the production starts with a distillation of British grain spirit and juniper berries, angelica root, orris root, coriander seed, cassia bar, almond, orange peel and lemon peel.

The gin is then moved to the house of botanicals in Aberdeen and is then macerated with delicate Moroccan saffron and chamomile flowers and a hint of muscovado sugar.

IT’S…*FAINT DRUMROLL*………MYSTERY AMARO TIME!

We at Asterley Bros absolutely love the mysterious world of Amaro. It’s a subject very close to our hearts and we have been making both Italian and English Amari* now for the next part of a decade. So we thought we would take the time to introduce some of our favourites to our Club Members!

BACKGROUND

Amaro is the Italian word for ‘bitter’ and Amaro is a hugely popular category of Italian Digestivo liqueurs, usually consumed after a meal to aid digestion. Bittersweet, with a heady mix of herbaceous, medicinal, bitter, aromatic & floral notes, Amari are very much an expression of terroir. The botanicals and flavours found in Amari are hyper-reflective of the regions in which they are made, using locally grown fruits, herbs and botanicals to create complex and layered bitter liqueurs. Campari, Aperol, Cynar and Fernet Branca are all examples of types of Amaro.

*Amari is the plural of the singular Amaro…

Our Mystery Amaro this month is:

MR BLACK COFFEE AMARO - 28% ABV

CioCiaro

THE HISTORY:

Time for our mystery Amaro of the month, which is the Mr Black Coffee Amaro from Australia! Founded by Phillip Moore and Tom Baker, they shared the love of coffee and drinking, and thrive of mixing the two to create something special for all to enjoy. In Australia coffee is more than a flavour, it's a culture, therefore their mission was to make coffee liqueur so people can enjoy as much as in the mornings and so much more in the evenings.

Their Coffee Amaro is a rich, bitter liqueur that blends Italian and Australian drinking cultures. Building on what is common to both Italian amaro and Australian coffee: fruit, spice and herbs, this is a modern bittersweet coffee liqueur made with 14 botanicals, including coriander, liquorice root, illawarra plum and gentian – as well as cold brew coffee, of course. Mr Black's Coffee Amaro has rounded, dark caramel notes alongside bitter citrus and a herbal complexity.

TO SERVE:

Very simply: pour 25ml over a couple of cubes of ice, swirl around the glass a couple of times, and sip slowly.

TASTING NOTES:

NOSE: Bittersweet and moderately spicy with pronounced heavily roasted coffee, herbaceous and herbal complexity, liquorice, vanilla and sweet orange.

PALATE: Rounded, dark caramel notes alongside robust herbaceous elements, with hints of citrus shining through to offer a refreshing balance of sweetness.

We hope you enjoy it as much as we do!
